Steel Structure Welding Quality Control: From Procedure Qualification to Final Weld Acceptance
Source: Quality Control & Welding Technology Department
Welding quality is the core guarantee for the overall structural safety, stability and service life of steel engineering. Weld defects such as incomplete penetration, porosity, cracks, inclusions and poor forming will directly reduce the structural strength, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance of steel components, bringing hidden risks to engineering construction and long-term operation. In order to provide high-standard steel structure products and reliable welding quality for global customers, our factory implements a full-chain closed-loop quality management system covering welding procedure qualification, process standardization, in-process monitoring and final weld acceptance, realizing full-dimensional control of welding quality.
1. Welding Procedure Qualification (WPQ & WPS)
Procedure qualification is the primary prerequisite for standardized welding construction and the fundamental basis to ensure stable and consistent welding quality of each batch. All welding processes in our factory are strictly verified and certified in accordance with international standards including ISO, AWS and EN specifications.
Before formal production, professional technicians complete Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) formulation and Welding Procedure Qualification (WPQ) verification according to steel grade, plate thickness, welding position and service working conditions. The qualification covers welding current, voltage, welding speed, heat input, preheating temperature, interlayer temperature and post-weld heat treatment parameters.
Only after passing mechanical performance tests such as tensile, bending and impact tests of qualified procedure samples can the corresponding welding process be put into batch production. This mechanism completely avoids random operation and inconsistent process parameters, ensuring that all welds maintain stable mechanical performance and organizational uniformity.
2. Pre-Welding Preparation & Raw Material Control
Strict pre-welding quality control is adopted to eliminate quality risks from the source. We conduct full inspection on base material, welding wire, welding rod and flux to ensure that the material grade, chemical composition and mechanical properties match the design requirements.
The welding groove is precisely processed and cleaned to remove rust, oil, oxide scale and moisture on the surface and groove wall, effectively preventing air holes, slag inclusion and hydrogen-induced cracks caused by unclean welding surfaces. Meanwhile, standardized preheating treatment is carried out for high-strength steel and thick steel plates to reduce welding stress and improve weld toughness and crack resistance.
3. In-Process Welding Monitoring & Standardized Operation
We implement full-process real-time monitoring during welding construction to ensure that all operations are carried out in strict accordance with qualified WPS procedures. Professional welders with certified qualifications operate the whole process, and the QC team tracks and records key process parameters in real time.
Strictly control layered welding, interlayer cleaning and interlayer temperature management to avoid excessive heat input, local overheating or insufficient fusion. For key structural welds such as full penetration welds and load-bearing welds, symmetric welding and segmented welding processes are adopted to reduce welding deformation and residual stress, ensuring the overall dimensional accuracy and structural stability of steel components.
4. Post-Weld Surface Inspection & Dimensional Inspection
After welding is completed, the first step is to conduct comprehensive visual inspection and dimensional acceptance of welds. Inspect the weld forming appearance to ensure uniform weld width, smooth transition, no welding tumor, undercut, surface crack, surface porosity and other appearance defects.
At the same time, check the weld size, reinforcement height and fusion width to ensure compliance with standard tolerance requirements. Clean up welding spatter and welding scars on the surface to ensure neat appearance and good stress distribution of the weld area, laying a foundation for subsequent non-destructive testing.
5. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) for Weld Internal Quality
In order to thoroughly eliminate internal hidden dangers of welds, we conduct professional non-destructive testing on all key welds, including Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Penetrant Testing (PT) according to project requirements.
The testing covers internal defects such as weld incomplete penetration, incomplete fusion, internal cracks, slag inclusion and porosity. All testing operations are implemented in accordance with international acceptance standards, with complete testing waveforms, images and data records. Unqualified welds are marked, repaired and re-tested strictly until they meet the standard requirements, ensuring zero hidden defects in weld interior.
6. Weld Mechanical Performance Verification
On the basis of appearance and non-destructive testing, we regularly sample weld test pieces for mechanical performance testing, including tensile test, bending test and impact test. Verify that the weld strength, ductility and toughness are not lower than the base material standard, ensuring that the welded joint has reliable bearing capacity, fatigue resistance and deformation coordination ability.
Through physical performance verification, we ensure that the weld can fully adapt to long-term load-bearing, alternating stress and complex environmental working conditions, and meet the safety life requirements of steel structure engineering.
7. Final Weld Acceptance & Complete Document Traceability
The final weld acceptance integrates procedure qualification data, process records, appearance inspection results, NDT reports and mechanical test data to form a complete set of welding quality documents. All acceptance data is filed permanently to realize full life cycle traceability of welding quality.
We strictly implement graded acceptance standards for conventional welds, important welds and key welds to ensure that all delivered steel structures meet international engineering standards and customer technical specifications. We fully support third-party inspections such as SGS and BV and customer on-site acceptance.
Conclusion
High-quality welding is the key support for the safety and durability of steel structures. Through standardized management from welding procedure qualification, whole-process process control to multi-dimensional weld final acceptance, our factory has built a scientific, rigorous and mature welding quality control system. We will always adhere to high-standard welding technology and strict quality inspection specifications, continuously improve the overall quality level of steel structure products, and provide safe, stable and high-quality steel structure solutions for global engineering customers.
